Confronting Challenges in Oakland and Hayward

Our third week at the Oakland site has been a difficult one, but despite the challenges that have arisen, the Energy Specialists have been able to push through and continue to service homes all over the city. Our team has been able to pull together and solve problems when things did not work out as originally planned. When some of the Energy Specialists had cancellations or ended their house calls earlier than expected, they hit the streets canvassing and set up booths downtown to recruit potential clients. They have been able to better understand the Thomas Edison quote, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work” [and I now know how to do it better].

We finished our week with more sharing about the experiences that have led us to this point in our lives, while also getting to talk with a leader of QUEST – one of the groups overseeing CYES. Regardless of the hiccups this week, I believe our Specialists have proven their capability as efficient workers, so these next weeks we will be setting up more appointments for them each day, with full confidence that they will be able to continue their great work.

Week three has come to an end today, my how the time flies when you’re busy saving energy, educating others about saving energy, and building upon our own personal development! On Tuesday we all had the re-training I spoke of last week and I believe it went well. Everyone was pretty receptive. We noticed that they way that we structured our site’s operation was not running as smoothly as it could we, so we decided to restructure some things. The new changes we made seemed to show a tremendous amount of improvement! Paperwork has steadily gotten more precise, Green House Calls have gotten completed faster, ESes have gotten more comfortable with working with the clients as well as more knowledgeable of energy education. Team Kick*** installed 50 CFLs in one house! The S.W.A.T.T had a no show today and was able to secure an on-the-spot appointment in five minutes! The number for getting client referrals, canvassing for community member sign-ups, and recruiting for on the spot appointments has risen. Today (Friday) we had a great personal development morning. The ESes opened up to one another and expressed how they felt about being apart of CYES. They were grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow in the Green Workforce Industry. We talked about how the challenges and accomplishments that they experience here not only prepare them for future jobs but also for life. It was AWESOME to see how every experience here can be used as an example for how to deal with other experiences to come. By the way the Energy Saving Storm caused by the Hayward Heats passion for Saving Energy Education is still in full effect. This is one storm that you don’t need any protection from so come on out Hayward and take advantage of all the energy saving incentives and tips while it last!
