It’s Green House Call Season! – LIFT Blog, Week 1

The California Youth Energy Services program started its fifteenth summer this month, with our first Green House Calls of the season taking place on July 1.

Each week, Rising Sun’s youth leaders, our Leaders In Field Training (LIFT), share their experiences and successes on our blog. Stay tuned for weekly updates from our fifteen site offices across the Bay Area!

Kennan Choy, Pleasanton

The time has come again for Pleasanton to receive more free Green House Calls! Our Energy Specialists have been properly trained and acquainted by our wonderful managers Cesar and Robbie. There are even a couple returning ES’s whose experience is greatly appreciated by the site. Canvassing is going a lot better this year thanks to an amazing Outreach Manager. The Energy Specialists have been working very hard to perfect their pitches and they sound solid. The Green House Calls themselves have been going well and we are just getting into the swing of things. I can’t wait to see what great things the Pleasanton site will accomplish in the coming weeks. Congratulations to first-time ES Diana for winning this week’s referral contest!

Juan Garcia, Martinez

Throughout this week, training has gone very smoothly and all our ES have been getting along and having fun. We have made skits, created posters and have had a great time enjoying ice breakers. Also, the first Green House Calls that the ES have done went very smoothly and were carried out awesomely. I feel very proud to represent this site as a LIFT and have high expectations for us. Between me and the managers, I’m confident that I speak for all when I say that training this week has been a blast. One of the my favorite moments was when well all played a game called Tank, which was an ice breaking and communication-building game taught to me during my training. Also, we split the ES into groups and made comic strips to represent various ways to deal with carbon monoxide dangers. In all, it has been a very productive and fulfilling week.

Maria Gomez, Hayward

“We are the E-Green Power Savers of Hayward, and we are here to save you energy and water!”

Eight wonderful, hardworking Energy Specialists, two managers, and I make up the Hayward team. We started the ES’s last week, and they were all eager to start working as soon as possible. Although there was a lot of information to learn, the Energy Specialists attentively listened, participated and asked clarifying questions. Prior to training week, most knew very little about ways to conserve energy and water, but with training, they properly prepared themselves to go into the homes of residents and pass on their knowledge. As we started scheduling appointments for this week, we were faced with the dilemma of having several cancellations, but with the assistance of everyone on the team, we filled up all our missing slots. I am positive that just like we handled this situation as a team, we will be able to work through any problems that come our way.

Souriya Chanthanasak, Richmond

GREEN SQUAD

At the Richmond Green Squad headquarters, everything has been amazing, from the Managers to the communication of Energy Specialists. Energy Specialists have undergone intense and educational training with the Green Squad’s outstanding energetic managers. On the first day of energy efficient assessments, the Richmond teams were able to install a total of 150+ measures on the first day, giving them confidence and hunger to service and install many more! At the Squad’s Headquarter,s we are already strategically planning to find more ways to help our community and create a “greener” community!

Katie Rozsa, San Rafael and Novato

San Rafael – The small and wonderfully close knit San Rafael site was focused and motivated during their training week. With highly intelligent Energy Specialists hailing from high schools and top public and private universities, the San Rafael site was already off to a great start. The ES’ strengths were honed and the group’s cooperative, active dynamic was instilled by the site’s Site Manager, Jenifer, and the Outreach Manager, Anwen. The San Rafael site’s training experience was further enhanced by their extensive interaction with their slightly larger twin Novato site. Conducting lessons with all of the ESes from both sites, sharing the physical space, and being able to brainstorm ideas and resolutions to issues with one another on the management level has proved to be a huge boon to San Rafael. In addition, joint food purchasing and donation solicitation in just the first week has left the San Rafael site (as well as the Novato site) ready to have a fun and delicious summer– with tree planting and pizza and burrito parties to be looked forward to. A fun yet competitive site, San Rafael is shaping up to be a highly successful CYES location with clients already saying that “(San Rafael ESes are) Personable, very helpful, very knowledgeable, and couldn’t have been more professional”.

Novato – The diverse and amazingly bonded Novato site was focused, yet relaxed, during their training week. With highly intelligent Energy Specialists hailing from local high schools and top private universities, many Novato ESes already knew and cared about the environment and their community’s economic welfare. The ES’ strengths were honed and the group’s cooperative, active dynamic was instilled by the site’s Site Manager, Will, and the Outreach Manager, Chiara,. The Novato site’s training experience was further enhanced by their extensive interaction with their slightly smaller twin San Rafael site. Conducting lessons with all of the ESes from both sites, sharing the physical space, and being able to brainstorm ideas and resolutions to issues with one another on the management level has proved to be a huge boon to Novato. In addition, joint food purchasing and donation solicitation in just the first week has left the Novato site (as well as the San Rafael site) ready to have a fun and delicious summer– with tree planting and pizza and burrito parties to be looked forward to. A fun and devoted site, Novato is shaping up to be a highly successful CYES location with clients already saying that “(Novato ESes are) Excellent, very well mannered and great to work with. They get an A+”.

Geron Stevens, Fremont

Fremont’s Rising Stars

This week in Fremont: Our team has accomplished so much since the first day of training, from knowing little about energy and water conservation, to being able to teach the community about it. I’ve built strong relationships with both the managers and the Energy Specialists. We have some of the most energetic Energy Specialists by far this summer. We had our first full day of Green House Calls earlier this week, in which I helped install over 100 15watt flood lights as well as multiples of other measures, like the 13s, 18s, and 23watt CFLS. After the GHCs, we gathered together and discussed the outcome and provided constructive criticism. Something I’ve learned about being a LIFT is that it can be hard to manage eight Energy Specialists when teaching a lesson, but once you know your teaching “style and technique,” you’ll have everyone’s attention.

Emilio Ruiz, Union City

This week is the first week of Rising Sun’s program that provides free Green House Calls to residents of Union City. Our Energy Specialists are eager to reach out to the community and help conserve water and energy that will save money on utility bills. This free program is limited to the summer, so sign up for an appointment today before it is too late!

Dharshini Nadarajah, Benicia

Benicia Energy Rangers kicked off the first official day by planting trees together. Our wonderful team consists of managers Derrick and Jeremy, as well as Energy Specialists Jay, Talaya, Drew, Carl, Indy, Kenya and Raphael. We are all highly motivated to help our community and cannot wait to do more Green House Calls. Last week was a great training week and we are ready to put our skills to work. Rising Sun Energy Center is new to the City of Benicia, but we believe we can accomplish more than 260 Green House Calls and gain a valuable relationship with the residents. Molly came by to show some support and dig some dirt. B.E.R!!!
